The cash values on this page are expected to change (increase) for the Fall 2008 Semester.
Graduate Aid:
Students who are admitted to the UEWM as graduate students, i.e. have a bachelor's degree or the equivalent of three years of undergraduate study (60 semester units), are eligible to borrow graduate-level Stafford loans. Subsidized Stafford loans do not accrue interest while you are a student or during the 6-month grace period after you cease enrollment. Subsidized loans are need based. Unsubsidized Stafford interest accrues from the time the loan is disbursed. Unsubsidized loans are NOT need-based. The maximum subsidized loan for each semester is $4,250. The maximum unsubsidized loan for each semester is $6,000. As of July 2008 these amount may change. If you do not meet the need-based requirements for the subsidized loan, you can borrow the combination of the two loans as an unsubsidized loan. There maybe up to a 2% loan origination fee and a 1% default fee. Federal Work Study may also be available to qualified students. This works out to total loan funds of $30,750 per calendar year/3 semesters). The maximum graduate loan accumulation is $138,500.
Undergraduate Aid:
Students who are admitted to the UEWM and do not meet the requirements of graduate status are eligible to borrow undergraduate Stafford loans. Subsidized Stafford loans do not accrue interest while you are a student or during the 6-month grace period after you cease enrollment. Subsidized loans are need based. Unsubsidized Stafford interest accrues from the time the loan is disbursed. The maximum subsidized loan for each semester is $2,750. The maximum unsubsidized loan for each semester is $2,500. These amounts may change on July 1, 2008. If you do not meet the need-based requirements for the subsidized loan, you can borrow the combination of the two loans as an unsubsidized loan. PHASE ONE
STEP 1
APPLY FOR PIN
The first step it to get a US Education Department Personal Identification Number (PIN). http://www.pin.ed.gov/ Until you receive your PIN, do not take any further steps. It takes from 4 hours to three days to receive a PIN from the Education Department. You will get an email from the US Education Department. It will have a link to a web site. You will need to login to the web site to get your PIN. Your PIN is four digits long. You will need to keep this PIN for the rest of your life. It will be used for yourself and if you have children that apply for aid or you work for a University that does federal student aid, you will need this PIN.
After you have your PIN and not before you have your PIN:
STEP 2
FILLING OUT THE UNIVERSITY FSA APPLICATION
The next step is to fill out the University FSA Information Application by following these steps:
- Wait for your PIN to arrive from the Federal Government at your email address fromstep 1 above. It takes between 4 hours and three days. Once you have your four digit PIN from the Federal Government go to step two in this list.
- With your PIN go to the Internet at http://www.edfund.org
- Select Students and Parents at the top of the screen
- Under Financial Aid Planning select QuickForm?

- After completing and submitting this form, you may go directly to "Filling out the FAFSA."
STEP 3
The next step after filling out the University's FSA Application is to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
FILLING OUT THE FAFSA
You will be responsible for filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You are not to bring this information to the Financial Aid office unless requested. In order to fill out the FAFSA you will need at least the following information:
- A valid Social Security Number that matches your birth date.

If you do not have this information handy, wait to fill out the FAFSA until you do. You cannot proceed to successive pages on the FAFSA with missing information. UEWM's School Code is 039953. This application is available at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov
The Federal Government verifies the data in their databases therefore the information submitted on the FAFSA MUST BE ACCURATE AND COMPLETE. If we find out the information is falsified we are required to report this to the Office of the Inspector General.
Special Instructions for students that DO NOT have a bachelor's degree:
You must answer the request for grade level as an undergraduate 3rd year student. You must indicate that you are applying for your first bachelor's degree. This will help the Federal Government know the level of funding you are seeking.
YOU ARE TO STOP HERE. DO NO PROCEDE TO PHASE TWO UNTIL YOU RECEIVE AN EMAIL FROM EdFund. YOU WILL RECEIVE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE NEXT STEPS
________________________________________________
If you do not hear from EdFund within two weeks of submitting your PIN in the FAFSA, please contact the financial aid office at 408-733-1878 or email financialaid@uewm.edu
After receiving your written notice from EdFund and only after receiving this notice, start the next steps. If you start before receiving a letter or email from EdFund, you will not be in the database and your information will not be received properly for processing. This will delay the entire process.
PHASE TWO
STEP 1
Borrowers are sent a letter from our Guarantor EDFUND via email advising you that your Master Promissory Note (MPN) will be available for signature once you complete your federally required Entrance Loan Counseling Test on EDTE$T , an on-line loan counseling program (an electronic link to the site is provided in the email).
REQUIRED LOAN COUNSELING
All students requesting a loan are required to go through loan counseling. This is necessary so you will understand the obligations you are undertaking. We require you do this counseling before you actually select a lender, apply for the actual loan and fill out your Master Promissory Note. (When you leave the University you are required to successfully complete the Exit Loan Counseling as well.) The loan counseling is on line at http://www.edfund.org At the very top of the page in the right hand corner in red with curved letters you will see EDTE$T. Click on this link. Select a State: California and click on Get Schools. Then chose Select a school (The University of East-West Medicine is near the bottom of the list) and indicate "graduate" or "undergraduate" and click on "Continue." Next click in the green box that says: "Entrance Exam." We recommend that you try the practice test first. This will give you the opportunity to learn the material, but will not be counted against you. Remember passing this exam is required. Practice it until you know you can pass it. When you are ready to take the test for real, you will need to enter your social security number and date of birth. At the end you will need your PIN to submit your final test.
STEP 2
SELECTING A LENDER
After successfully completing the Loan Entrance Exam you will be directed to the University of East-West Medicine's "Preferred Lender List" by clicking on a hyperlink at the bottom of the EDTE$T confirmation page. Here you will need to compare borrower benefits for each lender and decide on ONE lender to borrower your Stafford Loan(s). These lenders offer different advantages to every student. We recommend that you review the loan options and select a lender that offers you benefits that best suits your needs. It is strongly recommended that you plan on selecting only one lender for your entire borrowing while at the University and not switch between lenders. So select a lender carefully. If you close out the webpage and do not use the web hyperlink, go here: http://www.collegelenderlist.com
Master Promissory Note:
Once you select a lender, please click "Apply at EDFUND" link, which directs you to EdFund's WebApp site to complete your Master Promissory Note (MPN ), which is the actual loan application. Choose your selected lender from a drop-down list on WEBAPP and then perform the E-signature process. You will need the name, address and phone number of two US Citizens living at different addresses that you have known for three years Plus your PIN to E-sign your application.
Please note that loans are established for two semesters, which is one "Borrower Based Year." If you want $X for one semester and none for the second regardless, you will be processed for one half each semester. The second payment is not made until the beginning of the second semester. Therefore select your loan amount carefully. The allowed loan amounts are determined by your grade level in school, the number of units completed and your financial ability (need-based) as determined by the Federal Government when filling out your FAFSA.
TIME
After signing the Master Promissory Note with your PIN, your loan will be processed. It may take several weeks after signing your MPN before the school actually receives the funds. After waiting two weeks from the date of signing your MPN with your PIN, if you have not heard from EdFund, the Bank or the UEWM, please contact the financial aid office at 408-733-1878.ex 106
